Krakow and Auschwitz
Krakow is one the oldest cities in Poland, situated near the border with the Czech Republic it is brimming with history, from its birth back in the 7th Century right through to the present day. The city is the second largest in Poland and has become a popular destination and a tour here will open your eyes to both its beauty and tragedy.
Sitting prominently on Wavel Hill is Wavel Castle, once home to Poland's Kings and nowadays home of the State Art Collection. Nearby, is Wavel Cathedral with a 1,000 year old history, it is where the coronations of the Polish Monarchs took place. On this site you will also find the Crown Treasury and Armoury, Cathedral Museum and the Dragon's Den which is home to a legendary dragon, back in 1978 UNESCO designated the Hill as a World Heritage site.
The story of Krakow's Jewish community will be told as we visit the Jewish Quarter and Ghetto on a walking tour, stopping for lunch at a restaurant within the Jewish Quarter. We will also visit Schindler's Factory which tells us the story of the Jews of Krakow as they faced five years of Nazi occupation, their daily lives and struggles are recounted in this fascinating museum on the site of the original factory.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest of the German Nazi concentration camps and over 1.1 million men, women and children lost their lives there. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum takes us back to a time of horror and suffering with the authentic Memorial consisting of two parts of the former camp: Auschwitz and Birkenau and a guided visit allows for a better understanding of this unique place.
A must for any tour is a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mines, as we head underground to explore the 20 magnificent chambers chiselled out in rock salt, amazing saline lakes, majestic timber constructions and unique statues sculpted in salt. Our guided tour will take us along almost three kilometres of meandering corridors and we will descend to a depth of 135 meters underground.
