“Bespoke Tours for Groups
to the Battlefields”
WWI and WWII Battlefield Tours
“There is a merit to visiting historical battlefields that no amount of theoretical study can replace. Educationalists recognize that participation is the key to learning, and field study - with its unique and unutterably poignant mix of battlefield, cemetery and memorial - talks to both intellect and emotion. This is not an optional extra: this, surely, is core business.”
As the late Professor Richard Holmes so eloquently phrased it, a Battlefield Study is part of every Sailor, Soldier and Airman's education and further development.
AT CGT Battlefields we have been operating trips to the battlefields for service personnel for over 20 years; we understand how these tours work best, offering a high quality personal service where flexibility and value for money are key.
We will work with you and your planning staff at every step of the way to ensure that from your initial request for Approval in Principal, study days, delivery of the tour and the Post Exercise Report a partnership approach is agreed.
The British Army's AGAI 23 outlines the various forms of study that may be undertaken, namely:
1. Battlefield Studies and Staff Rides - described as Training conducted on historic battlefields with relevance to current operations
2. Realities of War Training - Military Ethos development delivered by the Initial Training Group
3. Battlefield Education - Generic War Studies, linked to the development of operational awareness
Although 1 and 2 above can be delivered using Public Funds, 3 cannot and CGT Battlefields have experience of delivering all of these and sometimes a combination of. Whatever you require CGT will work with you to deliver.
The RAF's AP 2279 stresses:
The aim of the SR is the proactive analysis of past operations from which direct application can be made to current and future operational environments through the study of:
a. The spectrum of military activity.
b. The employment and development of Air Power.
c. Command and Leadership at all levels.
d. Deployed operations.
e. The Ethos and Heritage of the RAF.
CGT Battlefields have a vast experience of delivering Planning and Preliminary Study, Field Studies and Integration/Consolidation for Battlefield Studies
“Fools learn by experience, I prefer to learn from the experience of others”
“The problem with being too busy to read is that you learn by experience (or by your men's experience), i.e. the hard way. By reading, you learn through others' experiences, generally a better way to do business, especially in our line of work where the consequences of incompetence are so final for young men”.
In any Battlefield Study planning is everything and CGT are experts in assisting you.
The single most important aspect of any battlefield tour is the Aim, with out one you will be unable to deliver the Commander's intent, you will not be able to plan what is needed, at what point and you will be unable to provide the support needed to achieve success.
CGT can assist at the early planning stages in helping you with the Aim and also in production of any request for approval that may be needed to obtain funding.
Objectives must support the Aim and ideally should be sufficient in number for every member of your party to articulate them and relate the sights you visit to them. You may wish to expand upon Learning Objectives for each sight visited, but these should still support the objectives and unless they support the overall Aim must be questioned.
CGT will work closely with your planning team to ensure that your objectives can be delivered in the areas you wish to visit.
The organisation of the team available to prepare the battlefield study will depend on innumerable factors, not least of which is available manpower for planning. Lt Col “Sticky” Whitchurch MBE in his excellent article learning from the Great War - Tips for Running Related Battlefield Studies and Lessons from 1914 for the future advocates an Author A, B and C. This may not be possible because of the stage in the training cycle of the unit. CGT are happy to provide whatever level of assistance is required to assist in the creation and running the tour. If needed all aspects of the tour can be undertaken.
By engagement with CGT at the initial stages of planning we will be delighted to assist you in research, reconnaissance, rehearsals and Post Exercise Reports.
Please feel free to call or e-mail your outline thoughts and we at CGT will work hard to turn them into reality.
